Of course most people visiting the Amesbury area, do so primarily to see Stonehenge, but once in this beautiful part of Salisbury Plain, find a whole host of places of interest to discover and find that one day is not enough.
If you enjoy Stonehenge, then you will be sure to find Avebury stone circle as, if not more fascinating. Woodhenge which is thought to predate Stonehenge, is only a few hundred metres from Catkin Lodge and although not as spectacular as its stone cousins, is certainly not to be missed.
Only a 10 minute drive away is Salisbury, where you can visit the beautiful cathedral which boasts the highest spire in the UK. Also not to be missed is the hill fort at Old Sarum, which was the site of the former town of Salisbury before it was rebuilt two miles away in the twelfth Century.
Just south of Salisbury is the New Forest, where horses, deer, donkeys, cattle and pigs wander free. This is an ideal place to spend a day and maybe take a picnic, Also close to Catkin Lodge are the Hawk Conservancy where displays of falconry may be enjoyed, a rare breeds farm, Wilton House and Royal Carpet factory, the beautiful Stourhead gardens and the charming old market towns of Devizes and Marlborough.
Directions | From A303 at the Amesbury roundabout take A345 towards Marlborough; this is Countess Road, Catkin Ladge is 400 metres on left. |
